Puppy time

Being this blog's first post, I thought "What better way to celebrate than with a puppy?" We picked up the little guy from the Animal Control Center last week, and so far he seems to be settling in well. The shelter folks claimed that he was a Cairn terrier, but I have my doubts. When I mentioned it to the vet she laughed and told me about a basset hound that had been labeled as a rottweiler by that same shelter.

After much debate and many nerdy options (Bernoulli, Pavlov, Newton, etc.) we settled on naming him Finnegan. It's in honor of his (dubious) heritage: Finnegan means "fair" or "pale" in Celtic.

Just a few days after we settled on a name I ran across a mention of it in Steven Levitt's "Freakonomics." Apparently "Finnegan" is projected to be one of the top ten white-upper-middle-class boy names in the next ten years. So, I don't know if that makes us yuppies or psychic/ironic.

In any case, it's a really interesting and thought-provoking book, with the added bonus of providing you with lots of trivia to throw down in conversations to fascinate your acquaintances and annoy your friends and loved ones.

I leave you with a picture of a basking puppy:
